Getting started

Dear participants,

Welcome to our TESOL EVOnline session "Becoming a Webhead (BaW) 2006: A hands-on workshop on how to use Web communication tools for language teaching and learning".

In order to enroll in our session, you first need to join our Yahoo Group where all the interaction through e-mail and file sharing will take place. To do so, follow the instructions on this page:
http://dafnegonzalez.com/baw-06/content/enrolling.html

Once you are registered in the group, you will receive a message with the instructions for the tasks to be completed for week 1, which are mainly devoted to getting to know all the participants. These instructions can also be accessed from our session web page: http://dafnegonzalez.com/baw-06/ or directly to the week 1 page.

For timely tips on some of these first steps, please refer to our Hints page

There are two main communication modes throughout this workshop:

  • the asynchronous mode (e-mail). Our communication center is our Yahoo Group (YG) that makes it possible to be in permanent contact with all members through its email feature (distribution list).
  • the synchronous mode (chat). Our group chats will take place at a fixed date, time and place -Yahoo Messenger, Tapped In, Alado, or vClass (Elluminate). They will be announced well in advance.

We will be using a forum to discuss and reflect on the weekly suggested readings, and a blog to comment on the live presentations given by our guests speakers. Both available through the navigation bar on the left.

VIP: GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is the standard time we have adopted, so please refer to The World Clock site (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/full.html) to situate yourself in your time for each synchronous event.

As we are an international group with very different and distant time zones, the time may not always be the most suitable for everyone. We know from experience that consensus is difficult to achieve. However, if you are unable to join our chat events, a transcript/log of the chat will always be uploaded to our Files section (YG) for you to read!

We will have guest speakers each week do a presentation and chat with you about the topic of the week. We hope you will take part in these sessions, hear what they have to say and interact with them. To find out about our speakers and sessions, go to the chat sessions page.
